Wood Duck Well Project

The Yolo County Service Area Division will be commencing construction on the Wood Duck Well Project (the “Project”), in the Wild Wings County Service Area (“CSA”).  The Project will provide an additional pump station for the new well to the Wild Wings CSA in order to boost stability in its water supply.  The Project is funded by a grant from the Department of Water Resources (“DWR”), as part of its Small Community Drought Relief program, with a match provided by the Wild Wings CSA.

The Wild Wings CSA operates two groundwater well stations, the Canvasback and Pintail wells.  The Canvasback well is currently on standby status, meaning it cannot be used for potable water except in limited emergencies.  The Wild Wings CSA therefore only has one potable water well, the Pintail well.  Over the past few years, the local groundwater levels in the Wild Wings CSA declined at an accelerated rate due to prolonged drought conditions, leading to concerns about the long-term viability of only one drinking water well.

In 2021, County staff applied for grant funding for the construction of a new potable water supply well (the Project).  The goal was to increase water supply reliability and create redundancy.  The well was drilled in 2022.  Due to higher than anticipated costs, further construction was delayed and the work was phased.   The initial phase consists of an above-ground pump station and work is expected to begin during the first week of September, 2025.  TNT Industrial was selected as the lowest responsive and responsible contractor to build the above-ground pump station.  The County has also retained Alpha CM to manage the construction.

Work will be performed in the northwest corner of the Wild Wings CSA, on or near Wood Duck Street and the surrounding streets.  A map of the affected area is included here:

Construction will last approximately one year.  Work hours for the Project will be from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The schedule will be dependent on weather conditions and the availability of supplies.  Construction time may be extended due to unforeseen circumstances.  Residents may expect intermittent construction noise, dust, and road closures.  A traffic plan will be put in place for affected streets to guide motorists around the work area with local access to properties within the CSA.  The construction contractor will post notices to affected residential parcels approximately 48 hours in advance.  The public is encouraged to slow down when travelling near the work zone and to respect construction signage and flaggers.
