Dr. Mary Vixie Sandy is appointed to represent the 3rd district on the Yolo County Board of Supervisors by Governor Gavin Newsom on October 4, 2023. In March of 2024, she was duly elected to represent the district. At the time of her appointment she was the first woman to serve on the Board of Supervisors since 2010 and is the first woman to represent the third district, which includes Woodland, Bryte, Broderick, and the Wild Wings Community.

Supervisor Vixie Sandy has spent her 30+ year career as a policy leader working in higher education and government.  In addition to her work on the Board of Supervisors, Vixie Sandy serves as the executive director of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the nation’s oldest independent standards board for educators. Previous positions she’s held have been at UC Davis School of Education, California State University Chancellor’s Office, and California Department of Education.

She holds a doctorate in education from UC Berkeley, a master’s degree in education from UC Davis and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Sonoma State University. Her professional focus has been on building the capacity of teachers, leaders, public schools and communities to meet the needs of California’s diverse student body.

In November of 2022, Dr. Vixie Sandy was recognized nationally for her contributions in advancing accomplished teaching when she was awarded the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards James A. Kelly Award. Notable past recipients of this award include President Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama, Barbara Kelley, Edward Rust, Jr., Linda Darling-Hammond, Michael Kirst, Mary Futrell, Barnett Berry and Ron Thorpe.

Supervisor Vixie Sandy prioritizes water conservation and storage; services to the unhoused; and advancing diversity and equity. “I am deeply committed to this community. Yolo County faces serious issues including the need to improve water conservation and flood mitigation, to support housing and healthy working conditions, especially for the 8,000 to 10,000 farm workers who are a critical resource in our community, to preserve prime agricultural land and stay focused on efforts to support the unhoused in our community to secure shelter and services that help them stabilize and move forward with their lives.”

Dr. Vixie Sandy now serves as the 2025 Chair of the Yolo County Board of Supervisors.
