PRESS RELEASE
On Thursday, November 27, the Yolo County Central Landfill (YCCL), the Blue Barn Thrift Store and the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility, all located at 44090 County Road 28H, in Woodland, will be closed so that our employees and contractors can observe the Thanksgiving holiday. The Landfill will resume normal operating hours on Friday, November 28 from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
As we approach this holiday, landfill staff would like to remind residents about the proper disposal of cooking oil. If you are planning to deep fry your Thanksgiving turkey, please dispose of used oil through our HHW program starting Saturday, November 29 when we resume HHW services from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at YCCL. Cooking oil should never be poured down the drain or into storm drains, as it can cause significant environmental damage.
Additionally, due to the one-day closure of the landfill, Waste Management (WM) curbside collection services will be delayed one day. If your household’s trash, recycling, or organics collection is typically scheduled for Thursday, it will instead be picked up on Friday, November 28. Likewise, Friday’s collection will take place on Saturday. For questions about residential or commercial collection schedule, please contact WM at (530) 662-8748.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, landfill staff encourage residents to be mindful of food waste. To minimize what ends up in the landfill, consider encouraging friends and family to bring reusable containers for leftovers into new dishes, or donating unopened or uncooked items to local food pantries or soup kitchens. When all other options have been exhausted, please place remaining food scraps in your organics cart so they can be properly composted at Yolo County’s Compost Facility.
As highlighted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and researchers at Stanford University, Americans generate 25% more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s than any other time of year. With this mind, we ask Yolo County residents to make sustainable choices when shopping this holiday season. Wrap gifts in reusable bags and recyclable wrapping paper, shop locally to reduce emissions, choosing experiences over gifts, and ordering online early to consolidate shipments and lower delivery-related carbon impacts.
