Yolo County Central Landfill Launches Fall Sustainability Challenge

The Yolo County Central Landfill (YCCL) invites the community to take part in the Fall Sustainability Challenge for a chance to win a $50 gift card to the Blue Barn Thrift Store, located at 44090 County Road 28H in Woodland. The Blue Barn is operated by Yolo County’s Department of Community Services, Integrated Waste Management Division.

“While climate change is one of today’s most pressing challenges, small actions in our daily lives can also make a meaningful difference;” said Yolo County Board of Supervisors, Chair Mary Vixie Sandy. “The increasing volume of waste in Yolo County poses real challenges for our landfill, and we need to shift more focus to reuse and composting to help reduce our environmental impact.”

How to Enter:

  1. Choose one of the sustainability activities listed below.
  2. Snap a photo of yourself engaged in one of the activities in Yolo County.
  3. Email your photo to Blue.Barn@YoloCounty.gov by Monday, October 20.
    • With permission, entries will be shared on Yolo County’s Facebook page.
    • A winner will be selected by Friday, October 31.

 Sustainability Activity Ideas:

  1. When enjoying a pumpkin spice latte in a reusable cup.
  2. Go thrifting at the Big Blue Barn, open every Thursday and the 3rd Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  3. Decorate your home with compostable seasonal decor such as real pumpkins, gourds, leaves, etc. Remember to toss them into your organics cart at the end of the season or donate to a local farm for livestock animals.
  4. Cozy up with a book on a rainy day. Fill a bag with books for just $5 at the Blue Barn.
  5. Donate gently used towels to the Yolo County Animal Shelter (YCAS) at 2640 E. Gibson Road in Woodland or drop them in the textile recycling bins at the landfill.
  6. Cook a hearty vegetable soup and compost the trimming in your kitchen pail.
  7. Use the Waste Wizard tool at www.YoloCounty.gov to help better sort waste at home. Click on the “Trash and Recycling” icon then the “A to Z” list.

“The Yolo County Central Landfill has a long history of thinking outside the box to motivate our residents to not only engage in the climate discussion but take action.,” said Director of Community Services, Adam Fieseler. “This simple and fun challenge will support our overall goals of environmental stewardship, waste reduction and community engagement.”
