Post Date:09/16/2025 9:00 AM

PRESS RELEASE

To celebrate Farm to Fork Month this September, the Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), along with CalFresh Healthy Living team, will host a free food preservation class at the Herbert Bauer Memorial Community Garden located at 137 N. Cottonwood Street in Woodland. This class will be held on Saturday, September 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and is open to Yolo County gardeners of all experience levels. Participants will learn from UCCE Master Food Preservers of Yolo and Solano Counties. No gardening experience is required, and all are welcome to attend.

The Sacramento region is known as the Farm to Fork capital of the country and this class provides Yolo County residents an opportunity to expand their ability to enjoy fresh, local produce. Attendees will learn practical skills in fruit and vegetable canning and drying and take part in a hands-on “make and take” activity leaving with an edible, handcrafted treat made during the class.

“Improving access to fresh fruits and vegetables, including learning ways to prepare and preserve them, is part of HHSA’s commitment to helping our residents thrive,” stated Brian Vaughn, HHSA Public Health Branch Director. “We live in a region of agricultural abundance and are fortunate to have a community garden program with a strong partnership with the Master Gardeners of Yolo County to offer classes, such as the food preservation class, so everyone can learn to enjoy the bounty of seasonal produce year-round.”

This class is free to all and pre-registration is required by September 26. To register, contact Nick Gazda at Nick.Gazda@YoloCounty.gov or at (530) 666-8429. The garden is located at 137 N. Cottonwood Street in Woodland, behind the HHSA Bauer Building. Participants are encouraged to dress for warm weather and bring water. In the event of extreme heat or poor air quality, the classes will be moved inside.

Classes are offered for free throughout the year at the Hanna and Herbert Bauer Memorial Garden. To learn more about the garden activities and classes, please visit: www.YoloCounty.gov/garden.
